CROWN HIM AGAIN: SGA GOES BACK-TO-BACK
Give Shai Gilgeous-Alexander his flowers. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard captured his second straight MVP on Sunday, becoming just the 14th player in NBA history to win the award in consecutive seasons — and only the 7th this century. The room he just walked into: Jokić, Giannis, Steph, LeBron (twice), Steve Nash, Tim Duncan. That’s the company.
The numbers were silly: 31.1 PPG, 6.6 APG, 4.3 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 39% from three. He led OKC to 64-18 — best in the league for the second straight year. He broke Wilt Chamberlain’s 62-year-old record for consecutive 20-point games, finishing the season at 140 straight. He also won Clutch Player of the Year. As a side dish.
OKC has never had a back-to-back MVP before. KD couldn’t pull it. Russ couldn’t pull it. SGA just did. And if the Thunder run it back this June? He joins Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James as the only players ever to stack back-to-back MVPs with back-to-back chips. That’s not a hot take. That’s the math.
CAVS PUT DETROIT TO SLEEP IN GAME 7
Road Game 7, against the 1-seed, after getting punched in the mouth by 21 at home in Game 6? Cleveland said cool — and dropped 125-94 on the Pistons anyway. A 31-point Game 7 beatdown in someone else’s building. The lead got up to 35.
Donovan Mitchell ran the show: 26 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds. Evan Mobley stuffed the sheet with 21 points, 12 boards, 6 dimes, and 2 blocks — the kind of two-way line that wins playoff series. Jarrett Allen bullied the paint for 23 and 7. But the spark? Sam Merrill came off the bench and dropped 23 on 5-of-8 from deep. When your seventh man is a flamethrower, you’re built for May.
Cade Cunningham went 5-of-16. The whole Detroit starting unit got cooked. The Cavs survived two Game 7s to get here — Toronto first, then Detroit on the road. This is a team that does not panic.
THE CONFERENCE FINALS ARE HERE
The final four is locked. Thunder vs. Spurs in the West. Game 1 tips tonight in OKC. Knicks vs. Cavs in the East, opening Tuesday at MSG. Two series. Four loaded rosters. One path to the Finals. And in the spirit of these franchises — five championships in San Antonio, two in New York, one in Seattle/OKC, one in Cleveland — the storylines are everywhere.
CAN THE THUNDER REPEAT?
The defending champs swept Phoenix, swept the Lakers, and are riding their two-time MVP into the West Finals. Three-peats are unicorns. Back-to-backs are hard enough. OKC has the league’s youngest core and energy for days. The question isn’t talent — it’s whether the legs hold.
CAN THE YOUNG SPURS KNOCK OFF THE CHAMPS?
Victor Wembanyama. That’s the whole sentence. San Antonio went 4-1 against Portland and 4-2 over Minnesota to get here. Wemby finished 3rd in MVP voting behind SGA and Jokić. If anyone in the West can flip this script, it’s a team built around a 7’4″ unicorn with a Hall of Fame floor and a championship ceiling.
CAN THE KNICKS RIDE THE WAVE TO THE FINALS?
The Garden is electric, the defense is suffocating, and the Knicks know how to win at home. They closed out Atlanta in six and swept the Sixers. New York hasn’t been to the Finals since 1999 — 26 years and counting. The window has cracked open. Now they have to walk through it.
CAN THE CAVS FINALLY BREAK THROUGH?
Cleveland has been knocking for three years. Now they’re here. Mitchell is playing the best ball of his career, Mobley is a two-way nightmare, Allen owns the paint, and the bench is real. Two road Game 7 wins to get to this point. They are not afraid of MSG.
