The Rules

How It Works

Three things to know. Then you're ready.

01

One Letter At A Time

You're shown a letter. Name an NBA player whose first or last name starts with it. A through Z. No repeats.

02

Deep Cuts Score Bigger

Every player is tiered. LeBron is safe. Luc Longley is wild. Rarer name, bigger multiplier — up to 5×.

03

Speed & Streaks Stack

Answer fast and stack a speed bonus. Get them right in a row and your streak multiplies everything.

The Scoring

Three Multipliers.
One Score.

Base points × rarity × streak × speed. Master all three and the score ceiling is huge.

Rarity

Knowledge Depth

Every player is tiered. Household names score 1×. The obscure guys you forgot were even in the league score 5×.

Streak

Stay Hot

Right answers in a row stack a streak multiplier. Wrong answers cost a life but keep your streak. Skips reset it.

1.5×
Speed

First Instinct

Under 3 seconds and a speed bonus stacks on top. Trust your gut. Hesitation costs.

The Foundation

Mt. Rushmore

Four players. The faces of the modern game. In our scoring system, naming them earns the lowest multiplier — because everyone knows them. That's the whole point. They're the foundation every other player stands on.

23
Bulls · 1984–1998
Michael Jordan
6-0 in the Finals. 6 Finals MVPs. 5 regular-season MVPs. The standard every player after him is measured against.
24
Lakers · 1996–2016
Kobe Bryant
5 championships. 18-time All-Star. The 81-point night. Mamba Mentality — the work ethic standard of a generation.
23
Cavs · Heat · Lakers
LeBron James
The all-time leading scorer. 4 championships across 3 franchises. The longevity argument has a name and it's his.
30
Warriors · 2009–Present
Stephen Curry
4 championships. 2 MVPs — one unanimous, the first in NBA history. He didn't join the league. He rewrote it.
The Calendar

Bonus
Accelerator Days.

Some days hit different. On Accelerator Days, every player matching the theme stacks an extra multiplier on top of rarity, streak, and speed.

🏀

Tonight's Matchup

Players from the two teams playing in tonight's marquee game. Knicks vs Sixers Game 3? Both rosters pay 3×.

💜

Franchise Alumni

Every player who ever wore a specific franchise's jersey. Lakers Alumni. Celtics Alumni. The full all-time roster.

👑

MVP Day

Former MVPs only for the bonus. The 35-name club. Name them right, score triple.

🛡️

DPOY Day

Defensive Player of the Year winners only. Mutombo, Ben Wallace, Dwight, Rudy — they all count.

😈

Duke Day

Every Blue Devil who made the NBA stacks a 2× bonus. Coach K's whole roster, on the board.

💍

Champions Only

Only players who won at least one NBA championship count for the bonus. Ring chasers, welcome.

How it stacks: Theme bonus multiplies on top of your existing score — base × rarity × streak × speed × theme. The smaller the eligible pool, the bigger the multiplier. Themes drop without warning. Show up to find out.

After You Play

Coach. Compete. Share.

Every run ends with three things designed to bring you back tomorrow.

📊

Built-In Coaching

Three feedback cards — Speed, Rarity, Mistakes — showing exactly where you left points on the table and how to score higher next attempt.

🏆

Daily Leaderboard

Same letters. Same scoring. Same day. See where you ranked against everyone who played today. Climb back tomorrow.

📲

Built to Share

Every run generates a card with your score, rank, best play, and a callout. Tag a friend who thinks they know ball.

The Strategy

Three Tips
To Score Bigger.

The difference between a 50K run and a 150K run is usually these three habits.

01

Skip Beats Wrong

A skip resets your streak but keeps your lives. A wrong answer costs both. When unsure, skip.

02

Don't Default To The Obvious

LeBron for L is 1×. Luc Longley for L is 5×. Going one tier deeper across the board can double your score.

03

One Deep Cut Per Letter

Q, X, and Z are goldmines if you've got a Tier 4 or 5 ready. Quincy Acy. Xavier McDaniel. Zaza Pachulia.

Questions

Stuff People
Ask Us.

How many times can I play per day? +
Three attempts at the daily challenge. Make them count — there's no free play mode. Three shots. One leaderboard. New challenge resets at midnight ET.
What happens when I run out of lives? +
You enter Penalty Mode. The game auto-suggests common players for each remaining letter at 10 points flat, no multipliers. You still finish all 26 letters and get a shareable result.
What are Bonus Accelerator Days? +
Themed scoring days that stack an extra multiplier on top of regular scoring. Tonight's Matchup, Franchise Alumni, MVP Day, DPOY Day, and more. The bonus only applies to players matching the theme — but it stacks on rarity, streak, and speed. They drop without warning.
Is this affiliated with the NBA? +
No. Hoopwrld is an independent fan project. We use "NBA" descriptively. All player data comes from publicly available sources.
Do I need an account to play? +
No. Open the game and play. You can drop a name on the leaderboard when you finish if you want to.
How are the player rarity tiers decided? +
Tiers come from a blend of career achievements — All-Star selections, MVPs, championships, Hall of Fame status, longevity. Mt. Rushmore is hand-picked.
