Honoring Ernie Johnson · Inside the NBA The Best Point Guard on TV Has Never Taken a Shot.Every Inside the NBA night there are four guys at the desk. Two of them are Hall of Famers and one has two rings. The fourth has been running the show since 1990, and the other three will tell you he’s the reason it works. Ernie Johnson doesn’t score. He makes everybody else better. If you’re a hooper, that should sound familiar. It’s the job description of a point guard.

What a Point Guard Actually DoesWatch the desk one night and ignore the jokes. Watch Ernie. He asks the question that gets Chuck going. He pulls Kenny back in when Chuck won’t stop. He gives Shaq the setup and lets Shaq finish it. He knows when the segment is over before anyone else does, and he ends it. Then he does it again the next night. For 36 seasons. Ask him what he’s doing and he’ll shrug it off: “I’m just trying to steer the conversation.” Ask Charles Barkley, who has sat next to him for 26 years, and you get the real answer.
Perfect teammate. Not perfect host. There’s a reason Barkley reached for a basketball word. Every team has a guy who wants to be Chuck. Loud, funny, the one everybody’s looking at. Very few want to be Ernie, because Ernie’s job doesn’t show up in the box score. The best teams always have one. Coaches notice him before they notice you.
The Night He Gave the Trophy AwayMay 2015. Ernie wins the Sports Emmy for best studio host. Back on the set, he doesn’t keep it. He hands it to Craig Sager, the sideline reporter in the loud suits, who was in the middle of a fight with leukemia and had just come back to work. Ernie told him he was the one who deserved it. That’s an assist. The biggest one of his career, and he made it on live television in front of the people who’d just voted for him. Hoopers talk about “giving your teammate the ball.” Most of the time it’s a pass. Sometimes it’s the trophy. Ernie has never once acted like the trophy was the point.
UnscriptedThe part of Ernie’s story that doesn’t make the highlight reel is the part worth knowing. In 2003 he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He kept hosting through treatment. Most of the audience never knew what the man steering the conversation was carrying into the studio. In 1991, he and his wife Cheryl adopted a boy named Michael from an orphanage in Romania. Michael was later diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He would never walk. Ernie and Cheryl raised him, along with five other kids, for thirty years. Michael died in 2021 at 33. Ernie still talks about him in nearly every interview he gives. He wrote a book about all of it called Unscripted. The title is the lesson. You don’t get to pick the game you’re in. You get to pick how you show up for it.

Why “The Point Guard” on the art? Because that’s the job he’s done since 1990: run the floor, set everybody up, take none of the shots. The mic and the nameplate are his. The ball is ours. The thank-you is from every hooper who learned the game watching him steer it.
How the Nov. 11 Bonus Challenge WorksThe challenge is called Point Guard With a Ring. You get seven random letters. For each one, name a point guard who won an NBA championship, from 1989 (Ernie’s first year at Turner) to today. Starters and backups both count. Yes, Kenny counts. Two rings with Houston, ’94 and ’95. He’ll remind you.
The first few letters are easy. Around letter five you find out who actually watched the ’90s Finals and who just watched the highlights. Play it on Wednesday, Nov. 11 and ERNIE JOHNSON – THANK YOU goes in your Trophy Case. Live midnight to midnight, your local time. After that it’s gone. Ernie would end the segment right there and go to break.
