CHAMPS VS CHAMPS: THE 2026 NBA FINALS ARE SET
The matchup is locked. The New York Knicks — back in the Finals for the first time since 1999 — meet the San Antonio Spurs starting Wednesday at 8:30 PM ET on ABC. Seven games, two storied franchises, one trophy. The frame writes itself: Champs vs Champs. Every banner in both rafters earned the hard way.
For New York, this is a 27-year exorcism. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby — Thibs’ squad — riding an 11-game playoff winning streak after dispatching Atlanta in 6, sweeping the Sixers, and sweeping the Cavs to take the East. The last time the Knicks held that conference trophy, Larry Johnson was hitting 4-point plays and Jeff Van Gundy was hanging off Alonzo Mourning’s leg.
On the other side: the San Antonio Spurs. Victor Wembanyama’s first Finals. Pop’s first since 2014. A young roster wrapped around a 7’4″ generational unicorn that just took down the defending champs in the most chaotic Game 7 the West Finals has produced in years. The greatest coach in basketball history one win away from his sixth ring.
THE KNICKS’ BANNERS
New York has two: 1970 and 1973. Willis Reed limping out of the tunnel. Walt Frazier dropping 36 and 19 in Game 7. Dave DeBusschere boxing out the world. Bill Bradley with the smart pass. That was 53 years ago. The Knicks have been chasing it ever since — the ’94 Finals with Ewing, the ’99 8-seed Cinderella, two decades of MSG starvation in between. This 2026 squad is the closest NY has come to closing the door on all of it.
